The hidden potential of dyslexia

Unlock Innovation, in partnership with NZTech, would like to understand more about the issues surrounding unrecognised and underutilised dyslexic talent in New Zealand.

With a deeper understanding, we aim to empower organisations to access the innovative potential we believe dyslexic individuals can bring.

Our initial survey, The hidden potential of dyslexia, is now closed. The results can be viewed at the bottom of this page.

Background

  • Up to 1 in 5 New Zealanders are dyslexic, the most prevalent neurodiversity often concealed.

  • Dyslexics, constituting around 35% of entrepreneurs, have founded leading brands.

  • Despite strides in accommodating diverse learners in schools, dyslexic adults in the workforce are overlooked.

Our Approach

  • In 2022, we partnered with Canterbury Tech and received MBIE funding for a research program.

  • A workshop series with tech companies and interviews with dyslexic individuals revealed key insights.

Key Learnings

  • Dyslexia is prevalent yet concealed, with many individuals undiagnosed.

  • Dyslexics possess untapped potential, making it crucial for employers to recognize and celebrate their unique abilities.

Call to Action

  • We invite HR professionals, leaders, dyslexics, and allies to share their experiences and perspectives confidentially.

Here are some prompts that may help:

  • If you are part of an HR/People and Culture team, you may have concerns about employees who feel unhappy or appear disengaged. Perhaps your people leaders have identified individuals who appear to be working below capability or capacity.

  • As a leader involved in driving innovation, you may sense your teams are not thinking creatively enough, or building new solutions to future-proof the business. Or perhaps you feel as though you don't know how to communicate with some of your team?

  • Are you dyslexic, or do you think you might be? Maybe you feel as though you're not able to work to 100% of your potential or feel unhappy or unsatisfied at work.

  • Perhaps you're not dyslexic but have concerns about colleagues that seem to go unheard or misunderstood.

Privacy Assurance

  • Your responses are confidential and anonymised for reporting purposes.

  • No personal data is collected or shared with Unlock Innovation without your permission.
