Reasons To Give Women All Your Money

Flip Grater and I were both present at the recent Electrify Aotearoa conference. Flip’s article focuses as it might on why women are worth investing in.

Many words and much effort have been put into gender and culture diversity in the last few years. It is clear from what was covered in the conference that diversity does not equal equity.

What is it that renders a woman, who desires to be commercially successful, merely stroppy? Does ‘being stroppy’ indicate a lack of femininity? Does it threaten women’s traditional role as producer and carer of progeny; the creator of a comfortable place from which our men can come and go and thus have an external life?

I come from a bridging generation. Well let’s say, we set the pylons for the bridge but have had a hell of a job making the crossing ourselves. Our hope for our daughters is that they can learn from us and come from a place of confidence to take the next step. Our hope for our sons is that they can respect women’s desire to be affective outside of the home.

Within the very arbitrary division of gender, there are of course many shades and one of those shades is how we structure thinking, and deep thinking must be a function of all genders.

When I was a child, girls couldn’t be neurodiverse they could only be sane or insane and insanity was a one-way street. How many of those women deemed insane were simply overcome with frustration by the lack of opportunity to express their needs and desires. I’m not counting but there must have been many.

A legacy from my upbringing is I that I must constantly check in with my confidence. I wish I could recall who put up the slide; "what would I do if I wasn't afraid?". I have that above my desk and translated onto a bracelet which my friend, Carl Davidson's daughter, made for me.

So, we now have a conference to support growing number of women who want to start their own businesses. Go on you Flip, for pointing out the very many reasons we create good investments.
